Birding Hotspots in Mindanao

Digos City and surrounding area

Bgy. Sinawilan, Digos--Fish Ponds.

The area to watch here consist of marsh land, fish ponds, rough grassland and open forest.

​

Total species:76

Birds of interest: With a mixed habitat there is great diversity here. Shorebirds and egrets on the ponds, Rails, crakes and bitterns in the marsh, Grassbirds and Cisticola in the grassland and many doves and pigeons in the forest.

​

Special Birds: Pink-necked Green Pigeon, Golden-bellied Gerygone, Black-naped Oriole, many types of shorebird and marsh birds. Watch for peregrine Falcon. 

​

Lantawan Viewing Park.

Looking over Digos City near La Bottega on Davao-Digos Road. Just to the west there is a path going up through some trees. Its steep and tricky underfoot so not for some.

​

Once at the top there are great views over Digos and the valleys west and east. It is an open area consisting of rough and short grass where cattle sometimes graze. There is a huge quarry to the west. Further up the landscape becomes more forested and there are a few houses.

​

Total Species: 66

Birds of interest: Birds of scrub and rocks such as Pied Bushchat, Paddyfield Pipit, cuckoos, bee- eaters, cisticolas and grassbirds. Good for swallows and swifts. In the forest its more songbirds. 

​

Special Birds seen, Australasian Grass Owl, Peregrine Falcon and Philippine Serpent Eagle.

Digos City Eco Park and Arboretum

Opens at 5am, small entrance fee or free for over 60. Consisting of a lake and forest with a walkway most of the way around the lake. Early morning best to avoid disturbance from people and boats.

Total Species: 70

Great place for kingfishers, Brown-breasted, Collared, Common and Southern Silvery can all be seen either on the lake or the stream. Songbirds are many here and Magpie Robin is always very obliging with its wonderful song.. Look around the lake edges for waterbirds, egrets, herons and keep an eye open for raptors.

​

Special Birds: As well as the kingfishers watch out for Osprey, Philippine Serpent Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Black-faced Coucal and Gray Wagtail.
