Flora and Fauna
Mindanao is known for its rich and diverse flora and fauna, making it one of the most biologically important regions in the Philippines. Its vast mountain ranges, dense rainforests, rivers, and coastal areas provide habitats for a wide variety of plant and animal species. The flora of Mindanao includes towering dipterocarp trees, colorful orchids, ferns, and unique tropical plants that thrive in its warm and humid climate. In the highlands, such as the forests surrounding Mount Apo, rare and endemic plants grow in cooler conditions, contributing to the island’s ecological richness.

Mindanao’s fauna is equally remarkable, with many species found nowhere else in the world. It is home to the critically endangered Philippine eagle, one of the largest and most powerful eagles globally, which nests in the island’s old-growth forests. Other notable wildlife includes the Philippine tarsier, various hornbill species, wild boars, and colorful marine life along its coastal waters. Because of its unique ecosystems and high level of endemism, Mindanao plays a vital role in the conservation of the country’s natural heritage.
